2002 X Limited
Ok... I've decided to trade my truck in for a 2002 Excursion Limited. Now the only descision that needs to be made is... V10 or PSD? I test drove both, the PSD felt more stout. I've never owned a diesel before, what are the pros and cons? Any info on both powerplants would be appreciated, 0-60 time etc...
Thanks.
Thanks.
Ok, so I've done some 0-60's in my Expy, but the Excursion is s whole different story.
If I were to buy one, I'd go the extra $4000 and get the PSD. I've drivenf the V10 and it's ok, but that's it. The PSD is much more power plant and you'll get better MPG. You could install a Superchip and get as much as I think 130 more HP with a "extreme" program. A standard program I think get's you about 50-60 HP more and close to 100 lbs of torque. Otherwise, PSD is it I think.

I have never owned the v-10 nor have I ever driven a truck with one. I did have a 1999 F-250 4x4 with a PSD. It was the first diesel I had owned and I loved it. They are very stout and I don't think I have ever talked to anyone that had one and did not like it. One thing I did like about it was at highway speeds you could hardly hear the engine. It was great for trips. I don't think you would be unhappy with it but there is the price difference. I would also assume the re-sale would be better if it had the PSD, but I have no documentation on this. Good luck on you decision.
There is one thing no body talks about, diesels have a much higher service cost. Oil changes are in the $60 range, fuel filter needs to be changed more often, and depending on where you drive in the winter you might need to add a fuel stabilizer. Other then that if you have a need for the PSD then get it. If not save the 4000 and get a blower for the V-10 and have fun melting tires. Thats the road I'm going to take.
TufFord;
It really comes down to what you'll be doing with the Excursion. Go with the diesel if you plan on doing a LOT of towing/ hauling. If not, it's difficult to recoup the extra initial cost (about $4000) as well as the higher maintenance costs - - depending on the relative price of diesel and gas - - it can take in excess of 100,000 miles to break even. There is also quite a bit of info in the Diesel forum @ https://www.f150online.com/forums/fo...?s=&forumid=59
Either way, I don't envy you the monthly fuel bill. Best of luck.

OK firezapper, you beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing as firezapper. They may get better mileage but you pay the difference in maintenance. I also agree with fedexpilot, if you're going to do a lot of towing with heavy cargo then get the diesel. If what you are going to be towing doesn't weigh much, get the V10. Then if you ever did decide you need more power, you could add a supercharger from around 2,500 to 5,000 depending on type and brand.
Okay... I am pretty sure I am going to get the V-10, although I would really like to get the diesel. I am kind of apprehensive about diesel because I never owned one before and the maint. costs seem higher. On average, how long does a gas engine last, mileage wise? Assuming that I use Mobil 1 every 5k and don't drive it hard (all the time). Also, any rumors when the 2002 X's are coming out? I've heard Sept... Oct.. and Nov.. which is it?? If it is Oct. or Nov. I'm going to get the 2001 I don't want to wait.
Thanks for your help.
