Questions questions questions...

So i have my dads 2002 F150 7700 5.4L at school for mechanics class. It has 23x,xxx kilometers on it and it runs rough. We are rebuilding engines in class and we were starting to do a compression test on it to see if it needs a rebuild as we have tried EVERYTHING else to see why it is running the way it is. We were working on the first plug and the plug nut snapped off so we have no way to get the plug out. Ford said the head needs to come off to remove the plug properly. The cost of a rebuild kit for the 5.4 i am told is 1700.00 And i have been told that a 5.4 is not an easy engine to rebuild. So WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Is it a difficult engine to rebuild? Is it worth rebuilding even if it doesn't truly need it?

With 230k clicks on it a rebuild wouldn't hurt.

So instead of buying the kit. What exactly are all of the new parts required to rebuild?
Camshaft
Valves
Bearings
Gaskets
Piston Rings
What else?

I depends on how "rebuilt" you wanta go. Some things can be reconditioned and reused. I would consider going with a used engine myself. There are still some fairly low miles 5.4 2v engines out there. They still use them in the E vans and you can use one out of any f-150 up to 03 (04 heritage actually)Save you money and in the end I would trust that engine more then one a high school shop class built.

But, isn't the point of a high school class to learn how to do things?

^^^ Exactly.
So i have been told that you need specialty tools to time the triton engines. Is this true?

There's probably some more articles in there you might find useful.
