99 5.4 cam chain noise.

I bought this truck about 6 years ago. It has made the same noise since I got it. It has recently started getting louder. I'm sure it is the cam chain making the noise. So I'm getting ready to change out the problem parts. Is there anything I should know in advance? I've been reading alot of posts and seem to be more confused than before. Does this engine have 2 or 3 valves? Do the phazers go bad on this engine also like the 04s? The guides will be replaced. Thanks for any advise. Mike

No VCT on 2v 54's so no phasers. I think its pretty straight up. Lots of work but no special tools are really required. Get a haynes or chiltons book read the procedure.

Ok thanks! Do I still need the tool to hold the cams in place or can I slide the guides in without loosening the chain? How are the chains adjusted?
