Lost all low end...

After wheelin' at the FANOF-150 rally last weekend, I left for Chicago for the week. Prior to wheeling, I was gettin' about 18 MPG on the freeway. On the way to and from Chicago, I averaged 15 MPG, and seem to have lost all power below 3000 RPMs... I thought maybe I sucked some soup into the airbox and plugged the filter, but it's clean. What went wrong?? It's now a total dog off the line. It's not stuck in 4wd either... I'd feel/hear that.

Any ideas?

Oh, and I managed to get about 85 of the 90 lbs of mud off it before I left, so I know that's not it...

GI Joe,, buy chance was it a hot humid day? Also aren't you running that formulated gas in your area? Those 2 reasons will put your truck in the "dog class"
I didn't see what size motor your running, but 00 model at least didn't have the LEV motor.
I'm running in about 90°-95° during the day and I think these Gas co. have just let anyone put any type of gas in any region (JMO).
Get it checked out, Good LucK

Not sure about the gas... do we get it here in Detroit and Chicago?

In order for the MAF to go wierd on me, wouldn't there need to be some goo that got past the air filter? What would I be looking for?

It was about 80 and high humidity the one day, but yesterday it was low-70s and dry here and didn't make a difference.

Keep the ideas coming...

Check your exhaust system for any damaged pipes.

Question

I have a 97 f150 5.4l 4x4 Try this when the engine is cold it is real responsive, once it warms up it seems flat ,so certain things kick in once the engine warms up. The o2 sensors register once they reach 600 degrees F. All so try putting the truck in park bring up the revs mine starts to miss about 1200-14000 rpm at one time it missed in park at about 1000 rpm untill I replaced the ERG valve. From time to time I disconect the EGR valve and put a hose on it if you suck on the hose a few times you can hear the valve opening and closing this seems to free it up again and take away any rough idle. Mine asl doesn't seem to put till about 3000rpm. I have talk to a few machanics, heres what some said. the feul rail pressure might be low or the MAF sensor might be out or a lazy 02 sensor any one have any solutions?

Exhaust is OK. (adobe-coated ahead of the cat, but intact)

Performs the same regardless of whether it's cold or hot, 60 degrees or 90 degrees.

I doubt it's anything in the EGR system... It's only got 6600 miles on it.

It was EXTREMELY noticable Sunday when I hauled my 4600 lb boat to the ramp. It runs great above 3k, but is a total dog under it... I'm stumped.

I know this might sound whack', but you might try resetting the computer; remove negative cable - turn on lights for about 10 minutes - turn off lights - reinstall cable.

Joe,

Open up the air box and remove the inlet tube that goes into the fender and check it for an obstruction. There might be mud in it. The next thing to check is the pipeing after the the filter including the MAF. Something might have gotten past the filter. The last thing to check is the parking brake. When I played in the mud in Michigan my driverside seized. It had been going south for some time and the proverbial straw was the mud. I had noticed that my truck was slowly becoming a dog so after the mud I removed the driver side and the truck pulls fine now.

Regards

When I pulled the filter, I couldn't see anything noticable. I thought of that one... used to be a real problem on my 97, but I think they redesigned the box on them. What would I be looking for on the MAF sensor?

As for the brakes, I'll check it out, but I doubt that's it either. I think that between driving there and back, as well as to Chicago and back, it would've smoked the brakes. Plus, it doesn't feel like it's dragging, just no oomph... I had the caliper sieze on my probe, and there's a noticable difference.... it's still worth looking at, though.

Hey, did you ever find that shimmy in the right rear wheel? What about the vids??

Joe,

The sensor wires could be dirty. If so carefully clean them with windex and a Q-tip. The4 rear wheel shimmy goes away when I forget about it. Actually I haven't looked into it yet.
