Call the motor builder and see how he wants to handle it.

If it is a tapping noise it probably isn't a spun bearing. A spun bearing would be more like a whirring or grinding type sound.

How is the oil pressure? What oil filter did he put on?
From your discription it could be alot of things, maybe even piston slap.

He says he will take care of it. Its just that he wanted for me to run the 1000 miles back in San Diego but I came up north for Valentines. Oil pressure and temp is normal. He put a fram and then I took it to an lube place and I guess they put a generic one on. Whats piston slap??

You might make it around the block with a spun bearing, guarantee you're not going far. 1000 mi.? No possibility of that! If you don't want problems, even if you get it fixed, STAY AWAY FROM CRAP FRAM AND GENERIC FILTERS. I wouldn't give you 5 cents for a train load full of them- they're junk!
Piston slap is when the skirts of the piston "slap" the cylinder walls when the piston changes direction. Happens mostly on "square" engines (bore and stroke are close to the same) because the piston skirts get more of a chance to throw their butt one way and then the other. It's not uncommon, doesn't sound too good, but generally doesn't hurt much. Only hurts when other people laugh at you because your truck sounds like a junker.

You need to have someone listen to it where you are and determine what it sounds like it is before you even think of driving it back. Could be something that wouldn't cause any problem, like piston slap. If it's a broken ring or cracked piston or something else serious (like spun bearing) don't even think of trying to drive it that far.

Piston slap is when the piston rocks or wobbles when the rod angle changes, like at the top or bottom of the stroke. It is usually from a loose bore or an improper wrist pin clearance ( that is the pin that holds the piston to the top of the rod). If it is too tight it binds and when the rod angle changes it forces the skirt against the bore. Just think of it as the piston rattling in the bore instead of sliding smooth.

Loose the Fram filter, put a quality filter in it b/c it can change the way it lubricates it self.

I'm sitting here moving my hands around to show you what piston slap is, but I don't think you are watching. It's easier to show you but I hope I splained it good enough.

Also if he said drive it, then it should be in him if something breaks.

Good luck.

it actually started after i did the oil change. But like I say I up the rpm's to 800-1000 and theres no noise what so ever. Should I put on a motorcraft and see if it goes away??

Hey JG, I've heard way too many NEW vehicles with piston slap. I'm only about 30 mi from you and worked for a trans agency that processed a LOT of vehicles. Chebbies seemed worse, but there are plenty others with the slap, even when new. I always hated to hear it, but I doubt that any manufacturer would rebuild a new vehicle because of piston slap. They'd be rebuilding a ton of 'em if they did. Sometimes goes away when warmed up, sometimes not. Let's see again what that slap looks like.
