5.4 3V plug smashed from inside

if it flooded it would eventually hydrolock, which could cause damage to the plug.


Gas also cools the cylinder, right before it catches fire

Sorry the pics aren't more detailed, but if it's melted do you think I could try a new injector and plug before pulling the head? Also when I took the scope to look into the chamber it appears that I can see part of one of the valves. Would that be because perhaps it's open or could it be bent?

Rotate the motor by hand and take another look with the scope, if the valve still looks the same then it's probably stuck/bent. You said that you had a noise when it happened, so to me it sounds like something came apart in there.

How did the top of the piston look with the scope?

OK, here's where it's at. Turned engine over found valves show and dissapear normally. Top of piston showed nicks and dents (very small ones). Put a new plug in and turned it over by hand. No problems no hitting. So I put it all back together and started it up. It idled rough and stalled, started again and stalled then it wouldn't start, just cranked. Showed the plug to a couple of techs from the local Ford dealership, all agreed it was smashed not melted, but no one could say for sure what smashed it.

Pulled the plugs they were all wet, #1 looked to have a small nick on the plug where the electrode wraps around. Went to do a compression test, but I can't find the correct adapter for compression tester. I've got 5 different ends and none of them fit. So I cleaned all the plugs put them back in, it started up, no knocks ran fairly well, but when the idle control kicked down it stalled and wouldn't start again, just kept cranking.

Now I wonder if all the on and off I might of damaged the COPs or is it a fuel supply issue. Going to follow JBREW's advice from another post and check fuel problems first. Very strange that the plug seems fine now.

They were all wet tho ? Man, you need to do that compression test now. Locate an adapter. Someone has to have one. Did you try Auto zone ? Do that free rental if you have to.
