For that price you could find a low mile used 5.4 and swap it in there.

The $650. to change it out is VERY reasonable. There are ways to determine where the knock is coming from though. I would question the mechanic, if he's just going to put an engine in "because it has a knock". ??? I personally think you'd be better off putting a rebuilt 4.6 in. You never know what kind of a can of worms you're going to get with a used engine. I would definitely buy a rebuilt from whoever is most reputable, has been in business longest and stands behind their warrantee the best if you ever HAVE a problem. 1st, I'd make SURE it actually needs an engine, unless you have 200k mi. on it.

Seems a bit odd it all of the sudden started knocking. Normally internal issues are progressive. Why were you taking it in to a mechanic in the first place? Was there an issue?

I'd take a low mileage used 5four over a rebuilt 4six any-day, but that's me.

Did your 'mechanic' drive the truck? If there is a sudden problem maybe the 'mechanic' is the problem. You should seek other opinions before putting a new motor in. Also did you notice a knock that was not there before? Was the truck out of your sight? You may wind up buying a new motor which is just yours cleaned. You have to watch some 'mechanics'.
