Getting the O2 sensor out

What is the recommended method of getting the passenger side oxygen sensor out? What tools to use and how to use them. It's so tight in there I can get a wrench on it barely but there just no way to get any leverage without seeming rounding the corners of the sensor nut.

I was getting the sensor not switching error code and after watching the switching action, I decided it was a bit sluggish and decided to change the sensors since they are 150K old anyway. After clearing the codes, they never came back yet, but I changed out the drivers sensor today anyway. Maybe it will help the cold start miss. Truck seems to run fine otherwise.

Hoping it will help the gas mileage too. I'm getting 12 now and was getting close to 15 or better a few months ago. I'm not holding my breath on that one though.

there a special tool for those sensors and the real challenge for me was plugging it back in the connection is in a really bad spot. You really need a guy up on the top holding the connection so you can plug it in from the bottom. The only other way I could do it (by myself) was to remove the transmission dip stick tube. Get a helper thats the best way. Autozone has the tool they rent it or you can buy it its not that much. Harbor freight also carry's it.

Yeah its a tough spot. I'm not sure how but I was able to get an open end wrench on it and break mine lose. But that tool jethat is talking about will make it easy and is worth it. That top plug should be secured to the back of the head.. But may have come lose on yours jethat. Either way, its real tight up against the firewall.

Thanks guys, I found the special tool for the 5.4 on autozones site, I didn't know they made so many tools for o2 sensors. I only knew about the deep well socket... which I didn't think would help me too much.

For now my new sensor on the driver side is dead Reads 0 volts all the way into work. So now I gotta go home and swap in the old one and see if I can get any money back for this one.. and maybe the other one too. I'll see if I can do basic bench test on them first.

You should use only Motorcraft or Bosch O2 sensors in these engines.

Because the cheap ones are too slow and some are dead like yours.

Well now that's just retarted to sell dead 02 sensors... I noticed I can't get these from rock auto anymore. hmmm... Hope I can exchange for denso or motorcraft without too much more cost.

For any one passing by and looking for answers on the how to part.... here's a link.

Bosch, not Denso, please. Bosch makes the OEM's for Motorcraft.

starting to get frustrated

We'll I got no love from rockauto, So 45 bucks down the drain. Got 2 more Ford sensors this time $75 more to add to what I considered "maintenance", and put one in this morning and still no voltage or very little at the most. Got up to .050 volts or so. Bank 1 is the drivers side right? I'm at a loss of what to do next. I've had 3 different sensors installed on the drivers side and none of them produce an acceptable voltage. At this point it looks like I have 5 sensors that don't produce a switching signal or I have a MASSIVE exhaust like before the sensor, just after changing out the original one. I can see if I can post data or graphs if it helps.

Bank 1 is passenger side. Check the connection on that side. No way did you get multiple bad sensors.
