IMO, if your EGR is bad, you should get a new one.
The EGR is an integral part of the system on modern motors. On a street motor, you are not going to gain anything by eliminating it. But if you take it out, you run the risk of overheating, among other things.
Before you block it off and drive the truck, you might want to do a little research on how the EGR actually helps your motor run cooler. Just my $0.02.

EGR codes rarely have anything to do with the EGR itself. Most of the time it is either a blocked EGR port, and bad DPFE, or a vacuum leak.
To help you the exact codes are needed as GLC requested.

Did you clean out the passages in the manifold elbow? You need to remove the elbow to clean it completely, it has intersecting drilled passages.
Blocking the EGR will cause you to get DPFE errors, as it measures EGR flow. So it requires modifying the computer to keep it from setting the CEL and codes.

I have a 2001 4.6 and I also have delt with the EGR problem. I dont remember the exact codes but it was for the EGR and DPFE. What it boiled down to was I had to take off the throttle body and clean the port. You cannot get to the far side of the port with out removing the throttle body. A tech at ford said the 4.6lts were bad about that, especially police cars because they sit around and idle all the time.
