1992 F150 5.0 L EFI won't start

I just bought this 92 F150 4x4. It has run ok for few days. Then on Sunday I went out to start it, and it started ok. I went in the house to let it warm up, since is is a little cold blooded. When I came back outside it was dead. The starter would turn over ok, it would fire but not start. So I pushed it in the garage. I installed new rotor and dist. cap. I MADE SURE I put the spark plug wires on the correct terminals on the new cap. Now it does the same thing. No change. Get inside and turn over the key, the starter turns the engine over, it fires once in a while but does not start. I tried pushing the accelerator to the floor and holding it. It still does not start. I switched fuel tanks. Same result. When you turn over the key you can hear the fuel pump work and then shut off on both tanks.
I took off the intake hose and sprayed ether to the intake. Engine still fires but won't start. By "fires" I mean you can hear the engine trying to start but it won't start. So any ideas what to try next? thanks Mike

Put at least 2 gal of gas into each tank. Then test fuel pressure with a gauge. Read this caption:

did it seem like the ether helped it fire more times than without it if so maybe try tracing a fuel issue if you have spark change the fuel filter check your fuel pressure at the fuel rails should be at like 40psi i believe

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It ended up I put it in the garage. Cked the fuel pressure. It seems to be OK. The plugs though were not fireing like they should...put in a new set of plugs and now it started right up.
Now I have the issue that it dies sometimes when I drive it. The idle seems like it is set too low. We cked the ERG valve and it is not stuck. Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

The first thing I would do is take the throttle body off and give it a good cleaning. Make sure all of the ports are open as well. Take the IAC off of the throttle body and give it a good cleaning. You MUST remove the throttle body, do not spray any cleaner into the throttle body while it's still on the engine or expect issues with the manifold gaskets. Put it back together and check it out. My money is on it being a bad MAP as that's the battle I fought with mine. Mine never coded a bad MAP but once I replaced it with a new one- problem gone for over a year now. If replacing the MAP, make sure to use a Motorcraft unit ONLY or expect issues.

Hi Labnerd,
Thanks for the tips. I don't think mine has throttle body fuel injection. It has a rail. I don't know much about these things. I ended up turning the idle up a little bit on the idle screw/bolt and it seems to not die now. I think the idle was just set too low. But we will see. HOw much was a new MAP senser from Ford?
Thanks!
Mike

Ford never put TBI on an F-series or Bronco, and you should never adjust the throttle stop screw - that's why it has red threadlocker on it.

Well fellias, it seams I have suddenly developed a problem with my 91 F-150 supercab long bead, 5.0 e4od truck. I work in the motorcycle industry and am looking to digging into mine. Its all stock and old, but after 372 dollers to buy it and lessthan 1000 bucks in maintance I think I love my old beast so I;ll figure this out.So far, it just died sunday during our tropical storm Debbie. Nope no deep water, never came over the tread on the tires and no I wasnt out n about, it stalled ten feet outa my drive way, gotta love that! So far no real fuel pressure, twin tanks and twin pumps, so thats out, the guage regesters fuel in both tanks correctly. ( yea the both still work ;), Just a dribble at the relief vavle, no fuel evedent at the pressure relief hose either so I;m thinkin fuel filter or fuel relay, Stay tuned, more to come
