A bit of a random question.....

I have a 1998 F150 Supercrew. As far as I know she is a 4.6l. However, I recently looked under the engine and the bottom of the block is stamped 5.4L. Am I missing something here or is the bottom the same on all engines but the heads make a difference?
I am not a mechanic but would love to know what is going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Damo

4.6 and 5.4 are two different motors! And they both have the same heads.

Did they even make a supercrew in 98?

Sorry chaps, that should have read Supercab, not Supercrew.

What does it mean then that I read this 5.4L on the bottom of the block just below where the headers bolt on?

I had the head gasket replaced amongst other items like the radiator, wtaer pump etc... Surely these wouldn't have fit if the motor was actually 5.4?

Head gaskets are the same.So is the Rad.
Probably the water pump also but I'm not certain about the water pump.
If it has 5.4 on the block,,,it must be a 5.4

I would also imagine if the block is stamped 5.4 then it is a 5.4L

Ask the dealer to run the VIN, if the engine hasnt been swapped before.

Does it have coil packs and spark plug wires (4.6), or does it have coil on plug (5.4)? What's the 8th character in the VIN? "L", "M" or "Z" is a 5.4, "6" or "W" is a 4.6.

How do I tell the difference between coil packs and spark plug wires and coil on plugs? 8th character of VIN is 6 but haven't checked if this corresponds with the number on the engine.

If I post a photo of my engine, can someone identify if its a 4.6 or 5.4?

Cheers

If it does or doesn't have spark plug wires, you will be able to see that easily. However, if the engine was swapped, it's possible that they kept the wires. 5.4's all had cops from the factory, 4.6's didn't switch till 2000 or so.
