95 5.0 f150

Hi guys, I have a 95 5.0 auto f150 and a set of alum gt 40 heads not being used sitting in my garage. I know the the mustang computers in 95 were finicky about mods and alterations of any kind, but what about the f150s? Basically what I want to do is put the heads and some headers on my stock 5.0 with any issues, if the computer will need a tune I will just wait until I have the time to rebuild my 351W. Thanks

These old EEC-IV computers can't be "tuned". It would take an external programmable module to "trick" the EEC into doing something different, and they're not very effective.

The best thing you can do is good regular maintenance using hi-quality parts & proper techniques. Headers invariably leak, and you won't see much gain for all the work of swapping heads on such an old engine.

I have a 92 5.0 mustang so I am familiar with the engine, but I wanted to get some opinions from guys that have already done a swap like this. The head and exhaust swap on a mustang is usually worth 30-50hp and 15-30ftlb depending on components. I'm not looking to turn this into a race truck or anything, just a little more giddyup and go. I know that these computers do not have flash tuning capabilities, and would require an external chip and that tuning isnt cheap. Question is will it come to that?

The truck cam is cut differently, and it's already set up correctly to push the weight of a truck. Same for the exhaust. You could swap in a car cam, but you'd lose the low-end torque needed to get a truck rolling.

You can spend as much money as you want modifying it, but it'll always be a pickup.

If you want a real increase in power, swap to a newer (4.6L) or bigger (5.8L) engine.

i say change the heads out the gt40 heads are good flowing heads for the 5.0 if you wanna do headers it would be best to do them right after you put the heads on there will be alot more room in there as far as a cam goes theres only so big that you can go if you dont have a maf my 90 didnt dont know if 95 does but with mine the biggest cam you could safely go is the e303
