plugs, valves, or timing?

Small issue: 4.6L FX4 with 74000K. When the engine RPMs come back down under engine braking or after I crank it up, it sounds a little rough, like it wants to backfire, but it never does. No indicator lights or codes are showing. It's not a huge problem now, but it could develop into a huge problem, and if I can fix it before then, I wanna. Any bright idears?
