SWAP REBUILD OR Back up 10 yards and Punt

OK I have a 1999 4.6 L in my 150 and it is, has always been, and I think always will be a real dog.
SO the question is do I go ahead and install a larger engine? if so the best year motor and size to use.
DO I rebuild the 4.6 L and add a few high perfomance parts?
I have read the post on how-to for both but I have not made up my mind. I am considering durability, gas mileage and amount of work involved as my three key factors for a decision. The mileage and the durability are the highest priority.
My punt option is to sell the truck and buy a new model with a larger engine or go buy a chevy.

Any thought, technical input, smart comments, etc will be thought highly of!!!!

Easy answer ehh Toyz. 99+ 5.4

Your 4.6L -

HP = 220 @ 4750 RPM / Torque = 265 @ 4000 RPM

99+ 5.4L -

HP = 260 @ 4500 RPM / Torque = 350 @ 2500 RPM

Look @ the RPM's were the 5.4L's make their torque.

Fairly easy, but definitely the cheapest route.

I say buy a chevy or put a Lightning engine in it out of a 2002 to 2004 Lightning.

Well you did say smart comments were welcome.

Any 5.4 out of an F-150 from 99 to 03 will swap in without much work.

You could be right the Lighting engine is a great piece of engineering.

I think I will go with a regular 5.4 though. It will probably be a little cheaper.

Does any one have any input on the gas mileage I could expect out of the 5.4?

They get the same mileage.
