5.4 Spark plugs - DONE!

After following all of the recommendations is Ford's TSB I still broke off 6 spark plugs. I had a friend who loaned me the Matco extraction tool and set to work earlier today.

The good news is that I got all of the plugs out. The bad news is that while using the tool 2 spark plug's fractured and sent porcelain bits down into the combustion chamber.

If you have this tool or are planning on using it I have the following recommendation. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE PORCELAIN PUSHER COMPLETELY DOWN AS LISTED IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. I found by trial and error that you can get enough threads on the extractor tool by leaving 3 our four threads on the pusher tool exposed.

I rigged up a shop vac with a piece of tubing and got the porcelain bits out of the combustion chamber. Hope I got all of them! Thanks for all the post's about this subject, without them I would defineatly be S.O.L...

You can get them done but it is a pain. Thinking back I'm not sure what I would have done differently to avoid the breakage in the first place. The electrode shield I took out with the extractor was pretty gunked up with carbon and crap.

I think if they are going to break they are going to break. I guess it is fair to mention that I used PB Blaster instead of AeroKroil. Maybe I screwed it up that way.

You used the old TSB. The latest one says to use carb cleaner. PB Blaster and Kroil won't soften the carbon. Carb cleaner will. We also have reports that it works best on a very slightly warm engine - not stone cold, not hot.
