opinions on Seafoam?

i did a little bit of searching and couldnt really find a conclusive answer. i have a 2000 4X4 5.4L with 172k miles. i bought the truck around 6 months agom and dont know much of the history other than a old man used it on a ranch then a kid drove it for about a year. im gonna be cleaning the TB and MAF, changing fuel filter, already have full synthetic EVERYWHERE. and then started thinking about a fuel or intake additive, just to clean things out. theres no rough idle or hesitation. just looking to clean and optimize MPG. the engine bay is pretty dirty and im guessing if anything the intake would need it most

Hi.

Searched? Rilly? With what?

There are over a hundred threads on this topic - here's just a couple....

BTW - just don't - there are far better ways to do what you need - and you can take Labnerd's and Jbrew's info to the bank.

GREAT stuff.

I have used it twice and LOVE it!!!!

I was having a problem with a sticky bowl float (They would not un-stick with tapping on the bowl OR running 2 tanks of Gumout and Lucas) on an outboard. It cleaned up the problem and have not had a problem since.

I also ran it through my 01 F-150 4.6L when I was having a rough idle. I have had no problems since. I just run it through every couple of months.

And lastly, I now a guy that was buying an old Jeep Wrangler that sat in a barn for 3 years without starting. He added 1 can of Seafoam and 5 gallons of fresh fuel to the 1/4 tank of existing OLD fuel and primed the carb. After some cranking and a couple small shots of either, it fired up and he drove it home (About 25 miles). The following weekend, he decided to take off the carb and do a thorough cleaning. When he got it apart, he told me that wherever the fuel/Seafoam had contacted the metal, it was as clean as new.

Needless to say, I AM a believer.

Seafoam = Snakeoil, DO NOT USE THIS. Worse case scenario or adverse effects when used, = Hydro-lock. Which can cost you a motor. Otherwise, you may just burn up your converters.

These are the two services you use for internals. -

1. Motor-Vac
2. BG

This is the ONLY additive for the crankcase -

1. AutoRX

I prefer the Motor-Vac Service myself and have incorporated AutoRX. You want it clean inside and want to keep it that way ? Now you know how, thoroughly and most of all , safely.

And the only additives you should put in the gas tank are Techron or Gumout with Regane.

i think the last time this came up we agreed that Terejerame's urine was safer to use as an automotive cleaning agent

BG changed the 44K formulation and it's no longer as effective as it once was. It's certainly not worth the 20 bucks they want for a can of that stuff.

Plug Fouler and Cat Killer would be better names for Sea Foam.

Seafoam:

Polluted storm water from rivers or drains that discharges to the coast. - Also Seafoam is formed on beaches and can be polluted with viruses and other contaminants, -oh , it may have an unpleasant odor to boot.

Iduno, I think it's much worse than someone wizzin on your spark plugs.

you want something that works like a charm in the crank case? ATF. Get your motor good and hot, add 1 litre/quart of atf. Run for approx 15 minutes. Then change your oil. I have done this many of times especially if you change your oil and within 500 miles its black. ATF has a lot of detergents in it that will break done the sludge and build up inside your motor but will not cause any premature wear or damage.

If you want TOTAL cleaning, I have heard of guys running diesel and kerosene in the crank.

+1 on the ATF i've done it before, and it's safer then seafoam since it doesn't thin the oil like seafoam does

I followed the directions on the can and my truck runs better. I noticed the tail pipe was real clean after I ran it on the highway. I have 120,000 miles on it.I use seafoam in everthing boats, lawn mower, blower, weed wacker.
