Swapping 4.6 for 5.4

Hi All,
I have been thinking about swapping out my 4.6 to a 5.4 in a 2003 f150. I tow a 7000lb trailer and it is a little to much for my engine.
My currant engine is a romeo with 160,000miles and would like to know what 5.4 engine would be the most compatable replacement for me. As best that i can tell i think my options are one with the egr or one without the egr....i believe i have an egr on mine.
Also what is the engine code for the two motors.....some listings go by code and others go by egr valve.
Thanks

That's a good idea!!

This will add extra horsepower to your truck and then you can easily toe heavier loads.

For 7000 lbs, I would say at least a 5four. An old 7.3L or V10 would be a little nicer for that weight, but it's possible w/5four. The 5four in the half ton, older half tons , I don't like going over 5000 lbs, but that's me .

I agree the 6.8 swap would be better for towing...

Thanks for the replies.
I have been looking over the swap notes.....what i would really like to know is what year or engine code would be the best swap engine for me. I believe i have a egr valve on my 4.6. So would a 5.4 with the egr be the engine i should look for.
I know the 5.4 wont give me a ton more power.....but i want to get 2 more years out of my truck and have been towing more and more. I dont actually tow 7000#.... my trailer is rated for 7700# and tow a max of about 5500#. And the 4.6 struggles with anything over 3500#.

I think I have it figured out....engine code L with egr valve. I will try to find one with under 90,000 miles.....it will be a nice project for me this winter if work slows up for a few days.

Okay, I'll bite. So what are you talking about, " with or without EGR" ? Cuz I haven't a clue. I know full well what the EGR system is, - I guess I don't understand where your coming from, really. Can you show me what your looking at, or where your looking ? Thanks.

I have been looking at used 5.4 engines online and they list the L code engine With or without the EGR. Which is why i have been asking questions on swapping motors..... I think there are 3 or 4 engine codes for the 5.4...got those figured out....... then seen the EGR thing.
I didnt really know anything about the 5.4 until i started researching it.

The Superduties had some with and some without an EGR system. The sellers do not differentiate between the 150 and superduties in the listing. If you get a VIN L without egr you will wind up with a Superduty 5.4. If you order a VIN L with EGR you might get either unless it specifies F-150. Just more confusion for the masses.

If your 4.6 runs well, why dont you have a chip put in it and then you can get the power you need...............just curious

Ford should have just made that an option. The 4.6 and your choice of miracle chip.

You weren't serious right?

If you were serious. - The 5fours longer stroke, larger rear gear and stronger transmissions, = E4OD/4R100 (option). This generation 5.4L in these half tons pull their own weight comfortably ,-factory. Where the 4.6L's struggle and it's just harder on the engine.

Why mod a 4.6L to do the work that the 5.4L was designed to do ? It's a larger expense,-out of pocket vs replacing the engine with one that can handle your needs from base.

A chip will come no where close to producing the torque of the 5.4. The 5.4 has gobs of low rpm torque where the 4.6 doesn't.
