Really rough idle

My Dad's '04 150 5.4l 3v seems to be idling really rough lately, really bad today. He hit 100k a few days ago, and all this crap started coming up. He got codes P0300, 316, P2195, 2198, I cleared them, the 300 codes left, both 2100's still there, along with P2197 now...Checked for all vacuum leaks, one hose was kind of shady, so we replaced that, fuel filter was replaced about a month ago. Don't want to start replacing O2's if they aren't really the cause of the problem. Once you're driving it, all seems well, plenty of power and whatnot, just at a stop light, or in P is when it's bad, sometimes on the verge of stalling. Per my AllData, there is no IAC on this motor (built into the TB) correct me if I'm wrong though. Can't seem to locate the EGR tube, even though I doubt that could be the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

I have the problem but threw a P0022 code. I replaced my cam sensors and its running smother but stills wants to stall sometimes when coming to a stop/idling/or in park. I have no clue what to do either... Have you had any luck? Did you get a P0022 or a P0012?

Take the truck to Autozone and they will diagnose the codes for you for FREE.. once you know what the codes represent, you can determine what needs to be repaired..

I have posted before regarding the same problem, rough idle at stop, but only once it warms up. I have replace both cam position sensors and both VCT soleniods. Still same problem. I question why only when it gets warmed up after say driving 3-5 miles?

Seems you and I are experinicing the same problems. I havent changed my VCT selonoids yet. Today I am going to get the truck scanned again and make sure thats its the P0022 again. I suspect when I had my Ford dealership change my oil they had asked me if I wanted regular or "full synthetic". I choose the cheaper not knowing my truck required full synthetic. This was last Thursday. Got the code last Sunday... Maybe this is wishful thinking... hahahaha. Im going today back to the dealership and going to have full synthetic put in and see what happenes. Ill keep posted...

Nope, didn't get any of those 2 codes, so I don't think it's the CPS. Still searching on this "issue."

Good info guys. Lets keep this going so others will join in. ive read almost everything on this issue but everyone has different takes... Some people get it after they got new cam phasers... Some before. Some install new CPS, VCT solenoids, and cam phasers and still get it. Its crazy. Mine is sparadic. When it doesnt do it it idles perfect. When it does do it all I have to do it put in nuetral and give some gas. Just a quick blip of the throttle and it stops. Im going to pull my VCT tonight and I will post pics....But again lets keep the conversation going to we get more guys in the convo... Thx again!

Mine definitely sounds like a diesel at idle, then gets to running extremely rough. Shaking pretty bad, unless I give it a little gas in neutral, around 1k RPM. Here is a link to a site explaining the VCT (variable cam timing), I used these instructions when replacing mine.

Thanks acf. So after you replaced them it didn't get any better? Also have you tried replacing the cam position sensor? When i did that there was a huge improvement. But still not perfect.

Good morning guys... This is the latest on my truck...

Yesterday I had a buddy come over to scan my truck. He has the Solarus scanner. The only that came up this time was P1000 and P1101. The P1000 I am not worried about and the P1101 is a MAF malfunction. What I think orginally happened was the first time I had my truck scanned(Monday on a different scanner from a tire shop) I had several codes. The guy who scanned them saw the P0022 first because of its numerical value and didnt go to the next error(maybe didnt know how to use it correctly;was in a hurry)which was a P1101. the P1101 was what was causing my stalling. I am glad though that I did replace my CPS's because the truck idles much better. But the sputtering came from MAF. We took the MAF out and it looked clean. We stuck it back in and cleared all codes. Drove around last night for two hours and truck ran like a top. Cant explain what happened other than some how something was tripping out the MAF sensor and causing it freak the computer out. The solarus scanner my buddy had allowed up to monitor the truck while it was running and check to make sure everything was ok. He said everything looked great so i feel confident my truck is fine. Hopefully this helps someone else out.
