Question Timing Questions

I am redoing the heads on a 1998 Ford F150 with a 4.6L engine. I know that it is an interferance engine. However I wanted to know if I could advance the timing just a hair to give it a little better performance? If not I will just put it back together the way it says in the manual.

Thanks in advance.

Also If I ever have to pull this engine apart again I would like to swap in a 5.4L but I have not been able to find out if I can use the same trans or if I need to get the 5.4L trans also. Will the 5.4L bolt up to the Trans my 4.6L is bolted too. and if I need the differant trans will my T-case bolt up to that trans. Or do I need all 3 pieces to make this swap work.

That might be a little confusing. good luck with the second part. lol

You can't advance the timing without installing new cam gears that are capable of being advanced. I'm not sure if the gears are pressed on the shafts or bolted, but you obviously will. If you are even one tooth off on the chains, you will cause the valves to hit the pistons. I've seen it done. As far as the trans goes, they will interchange on the bellhousings.

That happens quite a bit, -more than it should IMO. Here's a good go to ~

Thanks for the info I think that will help a lot in the timing. As for the swap that is the best write up I have seen on this swap. Thanks
