2005 5.4 Valvetrain Issues?

Been looking around and came across this forum. Looks like some great info here.

Have an '05 with 115k on it. It recently started knocking fairly loud from the right side of the engine. It's louder than normal and fluctuates with the RPM's. It has a power loss once I get up to around 1900 rpm's or so (starts out accelerating great until I hit 25mph on the button and then it gets a sudden and very noticable rough acceleration) and the fuel economy went downhill. Plugs were changed about 6k miles ago and it's been running great until recently.

I took it to my mechanic and he wasn't sure that he could get to it in a reasonable time and suggested I take it to the dealer since I was on a tight schedule to get it back.

This is where things went to hell.

Dealer ran tests and said I have a drop in oil pressure. He theorized that a piece of the oil filter broke off inside and got lodged in the oil system somewhere and the only way he'd be able to confirm that is tear the motor apart and wanted 2k to do that. On top of that, he said if what he's thinking is the case then I'm going to need a new motor which is nearly 8k installed.

Now, I might have been born at night but it wasn't last night. From what I know about the whole VCT system and components is that it can be responsible for the knock (either the phaser or followers maybe) and the loss of power in a certain RPM range certainly sounds like VCT issues to me.

Any ideas? Am I way off track?

Do you have any Knock Sensor codes coming up? I had a similar problem and was told something similar by the dealer. Turned out an oil journal must have gotten clogged and it ate up a lobe on the cam. Mechanic said he thought there mignt be a problem in the bottom end also so I bought a rebuilt engine and had it put in Ended up being a good bit less tha 8,000.
