Cil #2 Misfire

Cil #2 Misfire

99 4.6L 2WD

My truck stumbles and hesitates badly. I scanned a code P0302, Cillinder #2 misfire. No other codes came up.

What would be the most common problem for this, plug or wire?

How do i test a wire?

Also, what years had the problems of breaking plugs on removal?

04-08 were the breakage issues, 3v motors. Ours had the "spit out" issues. But can easily be avoided with proper installation.

How many miles on the plugs/wires?
If you have some miles on the thing, do your truck a favor and give it some new plugs and wires. Otherwise, you can test the wire firing signal with a light, or put a good plug in it and check it. You already know which cylinder it is, if the pockets are tight, pick up a new plug for a few bucks and set of wires.

This one covers the basics. Except, don't use anti-seize and you have plug wires instead of dedicated coils.

You can use it for the basics tho -

Plug wires:

Check the plug wire resistance using an ohmmeter. Touch the metal connectors inside the wire boots with the meter leads to get a resistance value.

You should read at least 12,000 ohms per foot of plug wire but no more than 50,000 ohms total for a long wire; otherwise its resistance is worn down and you should replace it.

Thanks Jbrew. Is the removal of the fuel line and power steering res the same on my 4.6?

Also 5/8 is the size for my plug socket as well?

So firing order would be = 13726548

YES, those would be the Coil Packs

If i go ahead and change my plugs and wires. Is it ok to leave the coil packs? I dont want to change them if they are fine

You can swap the 2 coil packs and see if the miss changes cylinders.

Highly recommended - Motorcraft plugs and wires, no aftermarket brands.

I took a look under the hood, since i saw on the diagram what plug was #2, and sure enough the plug boot on the #2 plug was not seated correctly, it was slightly raised, so i snapped it back in and have not had a problem all week, its been running great.

Im going to go ahead and change out my plugs and wires, i noticed that i have a/c delco wires on there now that were done a few years back.
I will replace plugs and wires with motocraft.

So i should be ok with my coil packs, since my misfire issue is gone?
