I have a phaser that has actually gone bad causing poor performance and throwing a CEL. I have gotten two quotes, to just replace the passenger side cam phaser. $550 and $850.

I am having the work actually done in two weeks.

It appears that if you take an F150 in and just let the dealership have their way with you, they will charge $1500 - $2500 to "fix" the problem. If you specifically ask to have a cam phaser replaced, it is much cheaper.

If it's a 3rd party warranty, probably not. They will find an excuse to deny the claim. The engine would probably have to blow up before they would fix it, and even then they will look for a reason to deny the claim.

What kind of oil and filter have you been using? It's not going to fix the problem, but it might prevent it on round 2.

So are your cam phasers diagnosed as bad or are you just changing them since they are making noise and you don't like it? If it's the latter then you're wasting your money, because all cam phasers make noise.

Dealers love noisy cam phasers. $$$

Just out of curiosity, besides the noise, what are the results of driving around with bad cam phasers?

I'm starting to think that replacing the phasers is a mistake without replacing the cam with a performance one. Comp Cams makes several that are great for these engines. You'd need to also install the phaser limiter too. I believe that most of the phaser noise is caused by an O ring failure, not the phaser itself. Replacing the O ring would be part of the cam replacement. From the failures I've been able to study, the failure is lack of oil pressure at the phaser. If the O ring fails, the phaser will run in a low oil pressure environment and won't advance like it should creating a retarded cam timing detonation we hear as noise. So if you are going to have the phasers replaced at yer expense, might as well get a performance boost out of it. And besides, you know you really want a cam sound with that exhaust system.

i mainly just dont like the noise i have no performance problems with it. the noise just bugs me bad.

Ladnerd i have been thinking of going that way and get cams for it also for the power upgrades and i love the way the exhaust sounds when you have a bigger cam.

4.6 Punisher i run a stock oil filter because they have the anti drain back valve in them and valvoline 5w-20 semi synthetic. im gonna put a quart of lucas in it next oil change to see if it will quiet it down a little bit.

Cam phasers

I just bought a 2008 Navigator 4x4 and it has a ticking sound. I was told it's the cam phasers. It rubs fine and no issues besides the ticking sound. Is this a problem I need to get fixed right away ?? Thanks
Also the Navigator had struts and coils instead of the air suspension, BUT it has an awful bounce as I'm driving down the road. Anyone else has that problem or knows what it might need ?? Thanks
