Rough Accel

99 4.6L 2WD

If i accelerate slowly without pushing it, i have no issues, but accelerating with a slight bit of power gives me a little bit of hesitation or sputtering of the engine.

It ha s a feeling of lack of fuel, or water in the fuel, or faulty plug or miss fire, Its hard to pin point. Earlier this week my check engine light came on for about 10 seconds, then it disappeared and never came back on?

Any ideas?

Have the code read!
Sounds like a slight misfire.

Even though the light is not on now.As long as you don't disconnect the battery. It will have a code stored in the computer.

How many miles since the fuel filter change? How many miles since the spark plug change, and what brand of plugs was used? How many miles on the plug wires and coil packs? If those were ever changed, what brand? When was the last time you put fuel injector cleaner in the gas?

You do need to get the codes read.

I will track down my paper work for the wires and plugs, I don't think i have ever changed the coil packs, Its been awhile since i put injector cleaner in , but i put a bottle in a couple of days ago.

Also, i thought the stuttering was happening on acceleration only, but it happened to me today just cruising at about 50 mph, i let off the gas for a split second, then it disappeared.

I would attack it by doing a complete tune up. Plugs, COPs, fuel filter, air filter, clean the throttle body and MAF. I think it's time. It's probably the COPs, but I would just it it all.

No COP on a 99 4.6, that has packs and wires.

If he has Autolite or Bosch plugs and/or some cheap offbrand wires (example - Duralast), that could be a strong contributing factor. 248k on the original coil packs could be too. If one or more plug wells have water/coolant/oil in them, that will do it too.

Could be any of the things mentioned in this thread.
But before I went and started throwing money at it I would get the codes read! And go from there.

I had the exact same problem with mine a couple of months ago, except I have a 1998. It turned out to be a misfire. So I gave it a full tune-up (it was time anyways) plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, the works. The problem was gone and it now runs real smooth.
