Cam Phaser

I recently had a ticking under the hood on start up in my 07 Ford Sport Trac LXT 4x4. After engine warms up ticking stops. I was told by Ford Dealer it was the cam phaser. Everhting I read says a cam phaser tick starts after warm-up. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

By any chance, do you have a Fram ilter or a filter from a quick lube place on the engine?

Possibly! It is my daughter's truck and she had the oil changed last at a quick-lube.

The truck is driven by my daughter and I'm sure she went to a quik-lube to have the oil changed.

The first thing I would do is get a Motorcraft or Purolater filter and put it on. Also, make sure it has the recommended 5-20 oil. The reason for the filter is that cheap filters use a cardboard anti drainback valve that will often collapse. The oil drains off the top of the engine and the Triton needs the oil on top at start up. It will knock until it warms up. I would see if that cures it.

I wondered that too. Thought maybe the 4.6 3v had phasers and that might be what he has. If it's the V6, there are no phasers are there?

No, it isn't. It is the 5.4 3v's that went into production in 2004.

OK - so - It's not the Cam phasers as it's to old an engine. 2001 - 5.4

Diesel like sound, cold or hot. The guy I bought the truck from said - it's been like that for years and his mechanic said not to bother fixing, as it "would just come back again"
So far - I haven't noticed any performance issues.
Any idea what this could be? This engine has 190,000 kilometers (118,000 miles)

thx
