Motor locked up.

My 2005 F-150 lariate lost oil pressure going down the hwy and the motor locked up.
What are my options now?
New motor, can the old one be rebuilt?
Thanks for any advice in advance.

I agree, a replacement motor is the way to go. By the way, how did you know you lost oil pressure. What did you dash gauge indicate???

arruba,
The needle dropped down to nothing for a few seconds and then went back up for a while then dropped again and thats when the motor cut off. The engine never made any loud noises that i could hear and it did not overheat.

Today I took it to a shop and the motor did try to turn over. The mechanic is going to drop the oil pan and said he was going to check the bearings and try replacing them before tearing into the engine. Now mind you,I am a cabinet maker by trade so I'm kinda at this guys mercy because of my lack of engine knowledge.

Thanks for the info so far.

if the needle dropped and came aback up it may not be the oil pressure. it may just be the oil pressure sender going bad, the ecu will shut the engine down if it thinks its lost pressure. if the engine still turns over and u didnt hear a noise its probably the sender

Are you aware that the 2005 fuel injectors have an extended warranty to 2011 and 120,000 miles? if injectors caused it to lock up, you will get a new engine from Ford, but it needs to be at a dealership.

Click the bottom link in my sig for the injector warranty for the 05 with the 5.4 3v engine. Sounds like you hydrolocked on the fly. You may be covered, please do your research.

I asked about the Oil Pressure gauge because the one on the dash does not actually measure oil pressure (a disappointment to me) and always reads just right of center once the engine is started. I believe that it will drop should the oil pressure go below 7psi…. but it does not get the information from any sensor attached to the engine block. It is one of my pet peeves with FORD that they could not include and actual working gauge. None the less, if your oil pressure dropped and then returned, possibly a working gauge would not have made much difference, but then again, if the oil pressure was low but not low enough to notify you (7psi), you may have had time to shut down……..
Good luck and let us know what the results are……………………..

Jimmy (the mechanic) dropped the pan today and it was not a pretty sight. Sludge everywhere and the bearings had gotten so hot they were fused to the crankshaft.

he said $3,000.00 for a replacement engine. he said he found one with 65k on it from his 'source'. 12 months 12k mile warrenty.

Anyone need some new kitchen cabinets, looks like I'm gonna need some side jobs!.

Oh, if anyone has advice on where to get a motor, I haven't committed to his motor.

thanks again

If you can find a used 08 5.4 with the new design cam phasers and heads it would be great.

If its 3000 for just the motor its too much. 3000 installed would be a half decent price.

I agree. If you look up an engine for an '08 or newer, they're not that much more than one of the earlier engines. Sometimes they're only asking $300. less for a 100k+ mi engine than a 20-25k mi of the same year. Never have figured that one out.
