5.4 interchange??

I'm new here. I have a question to ask ya'll. Me and my wife just bought a 01' F-150 with a 5.4 triton. I bought it with a trashed motor, it had been overheated quite a bit and ran out of oil which resulted in a spun rod. My question is, what year motors can I use?? Ford told me 01 only, the yard has told me a 2000 will work. This one is VIN code L and has EGR. Can't I use the 2000 and use my intake and dr side exhaust manifold if I need to, to retain the egr function ??? Is there anything else different about the years that I need to be aware of. Thank You

any 99-03 5.4 2v is a direct replacement. 97-98 had non pi heads and can be used if you change a couple wires a little bit.

Thats correct. 97 and 98 were non PI (performance improved)motors (Less horsepower)
For you, any 99-03 is direct swap (PI) other than possible very small things that might need to interchange. like remote oil filter location. As far as I know, all have the egr function. Wait, there was someones post a while back who didnt have the egr.. I dont quite remember which model it was though.

any PI 2 valve 5.4 will work, and if you use your truck's intake manifold it'llbe a direct plug-n-play

Thank you all. I was doing some research on my own and came up with the same answers ya'll gave me. I also found out it was the 02' and up that had the egr delete as an option. Now comes the fun part...locating a motor with decent miles that they don't want my first born for LOL. I figured I would ask you guys though....what do they say...when in doubt...ask a bunch of guys who fool with them all the time...well maybe that's just what I say :-) But thank you again....I'm sure this won't be the first question as this is the first Ford I have had that I actually liked...and want to fool with. I'm a converted chevy fan...I have seen the light and I have been baptized. Why don't we have a little icon like the smiley's that have calvin peeing on a chevy bow tie???
