Just a quick question on oil change
Okay guys Just a quick question, i have thought of running full synthetic in my pickup only for the reason to get more mileage out of it between changes. Right now i change at 5,000 miles running motorcraft 5w20. Was thinking going full synthetic as in mobile one or valvoline and maybe extending the oil changes to 7500 or 8000 miles, the truck has 110,000 miles. What do you guys think? Also if i run the full synthetic can i still run the motorcraft filter for that long? I hope im not beating a dead horse but just wanted some opinions. Also my wife has a 04 taurus and she avgs about 5000 miles in a month and a half and i was thinking of running full synthetic in hers also cause how often we change the oil in it. I run MC 5-20 in both vehicles and have been super happy with it just trying to get more bang for the buck if you know what i mean. Thanks guys
how many miles on her rig?
the sooner you start using synthetic the better...at 110k i wouldnt
im not sure it if will hurt anything switching with those miles BUT i have heard its better to start early with lower miles

If your driving is considered normal in that you are not running E85 gas, not towing over 20% of the time, not idling a lot, then you don't need to change oil but every 7500 miles. This is the recommendation by Ford on all of it's trucks. What has happened is that these engines are extremely clean burning and don't generate the deposits of old. The oil formulations have changed to also limit deposits and keep the oil viscosity stable. The latest formulation of Motorcraft oil uses a GpIII fuming acid washed white base oil that is extremely pure and is loaded with saturates, which is ideal. The oil is built around the Ford spec of 7500 mile OCIs. I've been changing my 04 4.6 at 7500 miles for years now and the reports come back with low wear metals and TBNs of 2.0+ which means there is still active formula to protect the engine. I could probably add another 1000 miles to the OCI but 7500 is enough for me. So if you are an average driver under average driving conditions, you don't need a synthetic to go the distance and you don't have to spend a lot to get there. Because the engine burns so clean, you don't have to worry about the filter going into by-pass.
FWIW, most of the synthetics you buy over the counter are a GpIII base anyway.
