Engine ping while idling?

Now I could've swore that I read some where that your engine isn't supposed to ping while at idle but Im not too sure if Im just nit-picking or what. It's done it ever since I've bought the truck so for me its been doing it for about a year and a half and also about five months ago I started using mid grade or higher. So is this something or am I just looking for there to be a problem?

Are you sure it's pinging? Are you sure it's not one of the other noises that the 3V is known for? If you're pinging at idle, you have a big problem. Any chance it sounds more like a diesel? That is a somewhat common complaint on more than a few of the 3V's. Mine doesn't do it but I bet that's what you're hearing. Do a search for "sounds like a diesel" on the '04-up forums. It's not right, that's for sure, but you'll be lucky to find anyone sharp enough to know what the problem is and fix it. I believe I have read of a couple of guys who had them "reflashed" (latest computer update) and it took care of the problem. Good Luck!

P.S. Quite a few of these owners (diesel sound) have been told by not too bright mechanics and service managers (my opinion) that they need to use premium fuel. WRONG ANSWER! These engines were designed to run on regular and almost ALL do run fine on it and the dimwit service people need to find the answer, not give retarded answers that do no one any good. Just trying to get you off their back because they're not smart enough to figure it out!

Well i have a 4.6 in my truck so no 3v. But the best way to describe it is that it sounds like when you run a vehical then turn it off and you can hear the metal popping and what not.
