2004 5.4 Problem

Ok I have a 2004 SuperCrew with 130,000 on it and for the life of me I can't figure out it's problem. When idiling it idles fine but as soon as you give it throttle it bogs down and shakes real bad, however if you mash down more it'll shoot out of it but when in the throttle it will go from say 3000rpms then drop like 500rpms then shoot back up then go right back down and repeat. It makes a rattling sound when it's shaking and running real rough but when you punch the throttle it stops. It's not the rattling sound like cam phasers, cause it does that at idle already. However I can pull over and shut it off then crank it back up 30 seconds later and sometimes it will run fine and other times it will keep doing it. It's been to the Ford stealeship and the cam phasers were supposedly replaced (I can't because that's too deep for me to do) although it still ticks loudly at idle, and they can't figure out why it runs so bad. They pretty much gave up and told me to drive it till something breaks. It is throwing a camshaft sensor code and multiple misfires (can't remember the exact cylinders). I've changed both sensors and it's neither. Can anybody think of anything this could be or give me somewhere to start cause I honestly have no idea.

By the way, the fuel filter was replaced at the dealership when they were trying to diagnose it and it has aftemarket autolite plugs but I don't know when they were put in, they're not the original motorcraft though and the air filter is new...thats about all that I can think of that's been replaced

I would say you have a pretty lame Ford dealership there my friend. These guys claim to be professional mechanics and they tell you to run it til it breaks because they have no idea? Did they just steal the Ford sign or are they just "borrowing" it from a real dealer? That's pretty pathetic!

Yea that's what I was thinking, there's no telling when that's gonna happen and who I'm gonna have with me when it does. There exact words were "we can't find anything, you're just gonna have to drive it till it gets worse(which would mean undriveable) or till something breaks."

Sounds like the PCM is dying. Usually when you have a malfunction as major as yours and no codes, it is the PCM going south. If you know anybody at the dealership, have them do a reflash of the PCM and see if that straightens it out even temporarily. This involves them reprogramming the PCM, not just unhooking the battery. If it will not reflash, it's pretty much dead.

See it does throw codes, they're like camshaft sensor bank 1, misfire cylinder 1, 4, 8 (that may not be exactly it) but it does throw codes and I do remember the dealership trying to pull my door code while it was there and they said something to the effect of "we can't pull it cause the pcm isn't communicating with the computer in that aspect" and that all that came up was 4 dashes...idk if that may have anything to do with the pcm going bad but that did happen while it was there
