Question 5.4 engine swap...need good info!!!

So, the story goes, i have a 1998 expedition eddie with a seized 5.4, 2v, engine, and have done some research on the model years, but nobody seems too definative in their answers as to exactly what can or cannot be used as far as a replacement engine.
To my knowledge Ford ran the 5.4, 2v, til 04', then went to the 3v engine, somewhere in mix around 2000, they started running the PI engines?
Questions ..
1. If i were to use a newer say 03-04, 2v, engine, would everything be essentially the same, or would it require a different ECU/PCM? what else would be needed to swap to this?
2. what effects do the PI engines have in doing the swap? i. e....exhaust, wiring, ecu?

Can somebody or manybodys, please help clarify the situation?!!

99+ was PI in the 5.4L 2v. Yours is non PI which as far as I understand, if you were to swap a PI motor in, you would need to either get the computer from the PI motored vehicle (easiest) or a custom tune. Depending on what year of PI motor you install, a few parts will need to be swapped, one would be if the new motor has the remote oil filter, you would have to remove it and install yours. I'm pretty sure wiring harnesses will match up... eh, oil pans possibly? Someone else can clarify depending on what year the new motor is as to what parts will need swapped.

97 -03. You can tune it if you want (99-03), but it will run without one. That's it, nothing else.

so, it will drop right in?
exhaust is not a concern, i'm goin custom anyways, but the tune and or ecu has got me a little concerned.
it's my understanding then, that the truck will run without a new ecu, but prolly not the like it should, and prolly wont' seee the use of the PI power unless i get a new ecu?
could somebody clarify that specifically?
also, the pan should be the same if i get one from a 4x4 expedition right?

thankx for the input!

Nope, you don't need a new PCM or oil pan. You can tune your currant one if you go with a PI replacement.

So you're telling me it will drop in and run , no issues ?
Also how are the pcms tuned , by flash or eprom chips?
Are injector or mass air any different ?

Yes, you tune it to dial it in sort a speak, for max performance/economy. The tune is thru software, like a computer (PCM). You can take it to dealership if your just after a factory PI tune. I'm not sure what they would charge , but for updates, non critical, they usually charge $85. To Flash yours should be about the same, call and tell them what you need.

Fuel trims (AF's) and trans tables are adjusted accordingly. A Power Improved set up will flow more, - that's the only difference between the 98 NPI and 99-03 PI engines. Easy swap, they run just fine without a tune, -a little better with (factory). You can step up the tune at a speed shop. A speed shop can set up custom tunes for you depending what you want. Like tow and performance tunes.

Two other things....
1.does anybody know if the eddie has any different options as far as the block goes , i.e.. the aux. heater?
2. is the 04 expedition 5.4 2v part of the interchangeable group or have i been misled by somebody not on this board?
The rest sounds 95% straight forward, the only thing i was worried about was the PCM "tune" issue, and now that's been clarified, i can make a better decision.
The only reason i asked about how the PCM is "tuned" , is i currently own a vehicle that has an ECU with an E-prom chip, which is replaceable/programmable, and also i run a piggyback computer on that as well, sorry for the confusion!

Thankx for all the input!

all 2v 5.4's are pretty much interchangeable. If your engine has a block heater youll have to add it to the new one of it dont have it, if you want to keep it. You cant really remove the block heater with out destroying it so you gotta get a new one. You might have to swap some parts on to what ever one you get but they'll all pretty much work.
