I have a 98 with a 4.6 motor with a 177,900 miles, the other day the rpm's jumped up to 4,000, temp guage pinned ,oil light came on, cel started flashing then it died. Had it towed to house, when I took off cold air kit and hold my hand over half of the throttle body when started she runs fine, remove hand and it falls on its face? Any suggestions what to try, head gaskets are newer, wires and plugs fine, one coil pack is new, exhaust manifolds are newer?

 

Use a OBD2 scanner and read out the codes.
