Tap tap tap

Hey folks

Fairly new here and I love this forum. I've learned a lot so far about these trucks.

Anyhoo, I've got an 07 Screw 5.4 with 123,000 kms. I recently had the plugs, fuel filter and phasers replaced. I still have an intermittent tap that happens once in a while. It is mostly noticeable after a bit of leadfoot action. There is no CEL or codes.

I'm suspecting it might be one or both vct solenoids. Every once it a while after lots of driving, mostly slow city driving, it will idle really rough and tap like hell still with no CEL or codes.

Could it be the VCT solenoids?
Does that sound right?

When I bought the truck it had a magnaflow exhaust and airaid intake. After reading some posts about how the CAI with no programmer makes it run lean, I tracked down a stock intake and installed it. It seems to run a bit smoother with the stock when its not tapping.

Thanks

As far as I can tell it's coming from the drivers side phaser area

bump!

How about the cats? As you probably know one of the things that can be damaged running a CAI with no tune is the cats.. Who replaced the phasers? you might think the dealer would have noticed if the VCT solenoids were bad while they were doing the phasers. Only happens when you get on it I'm thinking plugged cat maybe..

The phasers were replaced under an aftermarket warranty at a non dealer shop.
I can see how they could miss it. I'm thinking I might just do the driver side solenoid myself and see what happens.
