i have an 06 xlt with the 5.4 3v it is making a ticking noise, sounds like it is coming from around the valve covers. i had a problem about a month ago (codes pointed to cam phasers) the ford garage thought the solenoid was sticking, they freed it up and has been fine except for this ticking noise. (sounds like lifters chatering but i am not a mechanic). the garage told me that the noise was normal on these engines. they still have my truck, when i go pick it up i am going to listen to a new truck to see if it makes that noise. any other ideas or input?https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...ruck-2-005.jpg

 

A light ticking noise similar to lifters out of adjustment is normal. It is the electronic fuel injectors openning and closing.

 

You make ask the used truck dept to run one or 2 of their used 06/07's The 2010's may be a little different that the 06 even though it is a 5.4. I rented a 2010 while my 06 5.4 was in the shop and it sounded quite different.
