5.4 Plugs

Taking my 97' with the 5.4 to the shop to get new plugs installed. Truck has 135k on it, im the second owner as far as I know and am not sure if they have been done recently. Just curious what plugs to use. I have heard about on piece plugs, and the fancy new ones like the e3. also, anti sieze? and should I change my boots?

They do not make a 2 piece plug for that engine, only the 2004-2007 5.4 3v. Just get the suggested Motorcraft plug and do not use antisieze on the threads.

Your truck uses the standard type plugs as mentioned. Us the Motorcraft plugs and the job takes a couple hours (at least doing it myself) as access is a PITA. Your engine has the separate coil modules with plug wires, not the COPs that later years have. New plugs will not hurt anything and should make it run even smoother.

Motocraft plugs, part # SP-479 I believe... no antiseize and 28ft/lb tq. Dielectric grease on the cop inner boots at install.

Am I missing something here. 67000 and I need to change my plugs. How do I tell if I have the plugs with the shield or not.

Go get another cup of coffee!

You have the 2 piece plugs. Have you read up thoroughly on the issues changing them? You need Motorcraft SP462 or PZT1F.

Yea GLC, but too many people come on the forum thinking it's called the "psychic forum" a la Johnny Carson style. They put the question in a sealed envelope and you figure out what the question is and answer it and then open the envelope. I wonder sometimes what they are thinking.... or if they are!

Got my truck back yesterday from the shop, had them install all new plugs and a fuel filter. Price seemed a little high but was well worth it. I had them install Autolite double platinum plugs and a Fram fuel filter. The coils and boots were fine and they cleaned them also. Truck has great gas milage now (better than the 7 I was getting) and just runs better all around. definetly worth the money guys!

The plugs and the fuel filter should be OEM Motorcraft.

Many have had issues with the Autolite plugs they are not made to Ford specs. Fram fuel filter! You must not have done a search on this forum. If jbrew sees this he may knife you.
