Oh-oh misfiring badly....

OK, so we got around 6" of rain here in the northeast over the weekend.
Saturday I did some errands, truck ran fine.
This morning (Monday) my truck misfired all the way to work...

Are these THAT susceptible to moisture?
Do I just dry it out?
Do I bring it in for COP's??
I do not want to worry that this will happen every time it's *&*!$# raining out!!
WTF

Hello & good morning sir!

I got drenched as well - huge puddles - no issues.

Any codes / CEL's?

You can try pulling the COPS & boots to see if you got any water down the plug wells. Blow it out & dry completely if so. Reapply dielectric following the correct methods to all the boots to seal them.

You may have failing boot insulators - ninspect and replace any /all suspect ones.

[ BTW - Co-incidentally one or more of yer plugs decided to take a dump. When was the last time yer plugs were changed? If they are originals the plug gaps may be out of spec - which can cause misfires.]

COPS are a last resort - they fail very rarely on the 2004+ trucks. But it can happen.

Good luck!

Was the CEL blinking? That indicates it is picking up the misfire, and should set the code so you know which cyl is the problem. You can try drying out the problem cyl and it may be fine if the problem is water shorting out the spark.

The puddles were awful when I left Target yesterday Marc... roads are a mess in Easton and in Mansfield. I had to work at 5am after closing... fun fun!

You might be due for a Cops and Plug change.

I found a good definition

Definition: A type of Distributorless ignition system where individual ignition coils are mounted directly over each spark plug. No spark plug wires are used

(about.com)

They can cause a lot of issues on these trucks. Just from reading on here for over a year, it is amazing how many issues can be fixed with plug and Cop changes. If they get wet the trucks will run like crap.

individual " coil over plugs" Each plug has its own cop.

Takes a hell of a puddle to get water that far up in the engine bay...

Depending on the dealership I've seen cop and plug changes rate from $700+
You can do it yourself in a few hours for under $150 if your up for the work.

If no error codes or check engine light, how can you tell if ones bad? I had one replaced about 100k and it cost me $200. I would hate to do 7 more at that price.

I'm not adverse to changing my own cops. Its probably easier than changing the plugs. Wheres the best place and type of replacement? Once mines warmed up really well there doesn't seem to be a problem.

Thanx for all the help!

I didn't hit any big puddles or anything....
as I said truck ran fine, came out this morning and mis-fire city.
It's going in the shop tomorrow for plugs,
(have the plugs...don't have the time)
,a diagnosis of the misfiring, and an insp. sticker.

Hopefully I won't have to bend over and grab my ankles!

Search Ebay for "dg508" and buy a set from Global or Uneek. They should be about $80 a set with a lifetime warranty. Those are OEM quality.
