Is there a device in the oil pump that holds the oil in the engine?

Thanks for your help.
Check the oil pressure release spring in the oil pump. They go soft after a while.

Just because you have a Motorcraft filter doesn't mean it's not leaking. The anti drain back valve is not intend for prolonged periods of holding the oil while the truck sits. I'd change the filter only and see if that fixes the issue. I would suggest using a 5w-30 high mileage oil next time. The 5w means it will get pressure quicker. Going to a heavier oil at temp buys you nothing for your issue.

You could try a different brand filter. If you have a John Deere machinery dealer near you, ask for a John Deere brand oil filter for a number 800 John Deere windrower(1970s vintage). I can post the filter number if you wish. The 800 engine is a Chrysler slant 6. The filter it takes interchanges with a Motorcraft FL-1A. I tried running Motorcraft oil filters on it, but I had the start up noise you're having. Just a suggestion.

It happens even if it set for a couple hours, and the motor only has 68k on it is that considered high mileage? Thanks for the input!

Autozone does not carry John Deere. You may try looking online, and just having it shipped to your house. Shipping on an oil filter would not be very much.

The John Deere filter number is TY9425. It says on the box made FOR Deere and company, I don't know who makes these filters. It also says on the box "all new car warranties remain in effect when John Deere filters are used" if that's worth any peace of mind. I checked online, the current price at my local John Deere dealer is $3.72 each, this may vary slightly from dealer to dealer.

If you want to try a different brand of filter that may be available locally and not expensive, try a Purolator Pure One, Wix, or NAPA Gold.

The oil filter study that was done years ago claimed that the Purolator Pure One was the same as the Motorcraft FL-1A(if memory serves me well). I assume they are still the same, so you may want to skip the Pure One or try it last.

I'm not sure it's a full Pure One - the Pure One has a silicone anti-drainback valve where the standard Purolator has something else.
