5.4 Engine swap question
5.4 Engine swap question
Ok so I have done a thread search and found nothing on this so I am gonna ask. If there is a thread already just point me in the direction please. My 2000 F150 blew a headgasket and I am looking at just replacing the motor since it has 225k on it and it uses oil. My 5.4 has a plastic intake. I went to the local junk yard to scope out his selection and he has 5.4's but they all have aluminum intakes. He says they will not work in my truck they are not interchangeable. My question is why? Could I change the new engine to my plastic manifold?Or could I just drop the new one in and go? I dont know how they could be so different they couldnt be interchanged. He also have a ton of 4.6's so I could go that route also but I would rather not. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make one of these motors work in my truck? Or would it work and he just doesnt know what he's talking about?
As far as I know theyre interchangeable. I have a 99 (aluminum intake) and am putting a 2000 (with plastic intake) in my truck and have to swap the aluminum intake over to the new motor. Your truck has PI heads, I think as long as its a 99 and up motor (pi heads) then you can swap them. You might be looking at motors that are 97-98 non PI. Someone else clarify this please. 97-99 had aluminum intakes, PI was 99+. Which would be what you would want... 99+ motor, and swap your intake over.

No, the 99 motor is PI and has an aluminum intake. Your plastic intake would mount right up and be able to still use your wire harness and ecu, direct swap other than the intakes which need to come off anyways to pull them. There were a few differences in the 2001+ i think which included remote oil filters and pulleys. No big deal either way, all swappable parts.
Have you checked your local craigslist. I found a 2000 motor for mine with 10k original miles for 1200. Got the tranny and rest of the truck minus the cab for 300 more.

Nothing around here but he said he would sell me a motor for $400 I know him pretty well. What years will work 1999 to 200? And is an expedition motor swapable? Thanks for the advice TOYZ does anyone else have any imput or experience with this??
99-2003, There are guys in here with 2003 motors in theyre 99 and only had to swap a few parts, also able to keep theyre wire harness and ecu I believe. Not sure about the expeditions but I will bet on there is no difference.. I'm sure someone else can verify. As far as $400, thats a steal... as long as the mileage is decent and has good compression.
99's have metal intake and are PI..

If anyone could clarify if an expediton motor would work?
