2005 5.4 3V Engine Shudder - Electrical or Transmission????

I am a new member to the site but have spent some time in the past looking up answers to my questions on Google and always found a link to somewhere on this site so for that alone, figured I should join. For all of you who give your $0.02, thanks but I have been left confused reading so many of the other users’ questions.

I am no mechanic by any means, and am more or less looking to become more informed on my situation before getting taken again by the "stealership" on my newest repair that is needed so let me ask those of you who seem to know a lot better than I ......

I am getting an engine shudder when driving around 40-55 MPH and it seems to be around 1200 - 1350 RPM. Started off doing it only occasionally and now I think my engine might jump right out from under the hood when I am driving.

I have an ‘05 King Ranch 4x4 with the 5.4 3V, and about 85k miles.

I have read many posts about the plugs and wires needing to be replaced due to the low grade misfire and have also read about some being the transmission and transfer case issues????

Is there any easy way to tell if it is one or the other before I go to the Ford house and have them tell me it will cost a few thousand dollars to ultimately not fix the problem the first time around? (I really don't want to sound bitter, but unfortunately I am over my last trip there)

yep, time for those plugs to come out. id change those and the shudder should go away. i had almost the exact same symptoms with my truck, changed the plugs(MotorCraft) and good as new

good luck

I'd suspect injectors before plugs or coils on a 2005 5.4 3V, but you're due for plugs anyways at that mileage.

Update on truck:

Finally took in to the dealership and they replaced all 8 plugs and a coil on the #2 cylinder. Glad to know that it is NOT a transmission issue, however the plugs and 1 coil were not all that cheap either. The truck is back to running like a champ and for that I am thankful!

Glad they got it fixed! Yep, nothing we have done on these trucks is cheap!
