i have seen a couple that have stuck fully advanced causing that bank to not fire. Not common but it can happen. 04s and 05s are most prone to cam phaser issues. let us know wat they find from what you just said it sounds like they havent even looked at it yet....could be something as simple as a fuel pump or single missfire causing your loss of power.

05 was also a bad year for sticking fuel injectors, if thats the case it will be coverd uunder warranty as their is a recall on 05s for failed injectors and any damage they cause.

Ford Customer Satisfaction program 07M08 deals with the 05 5.4 3v fuel injectors. I'd go with that before cam phasers. Sounds like what mine did when an injector stuck open, hydrolocking my engine.

I got a new short block and one injector through 07M08, since one stuck open and broke a connecting rod in my engine as a result. I paid to have the other 7 that hadn't failed yet replaced, peace of mind. Runs like a top now. Nothing like a new bottom end at 72,000+ miles.

According to my local dealer, it is a super common problem. That's why I bought my wife a 2v 4.6L.

The "common problem" with the cam phasers is they're noisy, which isn't a problem at all unless you can't handle the sound.

I also think that the cam phaser problem is also compounded by owners NOT running the correct viscocity 5W-20 weight oil that Ford instists that you use, as the pasers are very sensitive to oil viscocity for their proper operation, & lifespan!!!

Like I asked in another post...does anyone know what actually happens to the phasers? And what makes them go bad?

Well, Ford runs a certain viscosity in the VCT engines for a reason, and that's good enough reason for me to stick with it.

I run exactly what Ford says to, filter and oil. My cam phasers are making noise anyway. 37,000K

Exactly what kind of "noise" do these phasers make? I've got a '05 F150 XLT SCab with the 5.4 and 39k miles and have been plagued with weird start up noises since new. The first noise occured at cold start after the truck would sit for a week or so at the airport. It would sound like a scraping noise but only lasted a couple seconds then truck sounded and ran fine. Dealer replaced the phasers under warranty. I still occasionally would hear the noise but the truck was also being driven daily since then.

Yesterday, during cold start I got some valvetrain rattle for 3 or 4 seconds. This is new for this engine.

Note: I've used the Motorcraft 5w20 semisyn oil and Motorcraft filters since new, changed every 3-4k. Thanks in advance for any info!

The startup rattle is caused by oil pressure bleeding off the timing chain tensioner.
