Unhappy Misfire. Help needed.

Ok folks, I think I may have a bad coil I hope. First a little History. I have 2001 Expd 4x4 5.4 liter with 129000 miles. I purchased at 111000. last year, and had it completely gone through to make sure all of teh service was up to date. This past Friday, while on teh way to the coast, it threw a check engine light, still running fine. Stopped in Raleigh at Cross Roads Ford, they diagnosed as a bad CHT sensor, and stuck thermostat. I had both replaced, requiring the intake be pulled and continued on. Tonight, Sunday, on way home truck started to shudder and shake while running about 75/ 80 mph in OD, Check engine light started flashing, I disengaged cruise and started slowing, before I could get stopped, light went out. I reset cruise and accelerated back to about 75/80. As soon as engine was under load of a small grade, it started stuttering again, and light came on and stayed on. I limped the 60 or so miles from Tarboro, to Raleigh and dropped it at Cross Roads again, and got some oen to drive an hour to pick me up. Also noticed a slight skip at idle while sitting in traffic.
From everything I have read on here it sounds like a coil to me. What is everyones opinion and could be somethig related to what they did Friday?

A Low Grade misfire hot spot is @ 45 -50 mph right after the shift to OD. Bad coil - yes.

BTW- speeding kills, if you don't care about yourself, think of others who have family's, have a life and like it.

I was in a 70 MPH zone and usually run about 5 over so I rounded up. Even at that speed I am getting passed more than I am passing.

JBrew, you run the same speeds & you're bustin his chops?!

Glen - yeah, it's a misfire and its likely a bad COP and/or plug. It's doubtful that anything the dealer did caused this but there's no way to prove or disprove. When was the last time the plugs were changed? Changing the COP's is pretty easy; the plugs are a little harder because some of them are a PITA to get to. Do the work yourself if you're up for it. It's really not too bad if you have a few mechanical skills and will save you hundreds of greenbacks. You can get an entire set of new COP's on ebay from either global auto or uneeksupply (just search 'DG508' and you'll find them) for around $80 and they're very reliable OEM replacements.

Plugs only have about 15000 miles, had them done as part of service, when purchased. Ended up with 3 bad coils. Dealer is going to replace, really don't want to drive 2 plus hours with it missing especially on highway 40. I will be ordering a set of coils, and either changing or hanging on to them until needed. If I wait hopefully it will be a little closer to home, when they need replacing. Also I just got my new Edge Evo, it just arrived from EDGE, on their upgrade program, so next time I can read the codes, and have somewhere to start.

I have had to slow down, the last few years. NC State Troopers are getting touchy. Unless of course I'm on one of my bikes. Those bike speedos are notoriously inaccurate.

Out in the west the speed limit is 75 there is a stretch of I-15 here in Utah that its 80. In a 75 cruising speed IS 80. people fly by doing 90 THATS speeding.. The highway patrol dont pull you over until your doing 85 if they pulled people over for less they would have to pull over almost everybody.

Yea, that's about how it is here, - speed limit 70, most are cruising @ 78 or so. They pull you over 80 +.

In NC 80 in a 70 will pretty much get you a ticket, from either state or local LEOs.

Just keep in mind that misfires don't always throw a code (which can be highly frustrating).

That is my only concern.
