I took my truck to the exhaust shop today to have my catalytic converters checked out. They told me that the temperature before the cat should be lower than after the cat. Mine was 100 degrees hotter before the cat than after, which would indicate something was wrong. They suggested that I get a second opinion. The truck is new enough that an aftermarket "y" pipe(with catalytic converters) is not available. Ford dealership says list price is $1900.00. I work at a body shop so our cost is $1300. but still that is crazy expensive. Plus I still need to buy the O2 sensors. Any other thoughts on the diagnoses and the part itself. I would hate to spend all that money and that not be the problem. Thanks

i think there is a warranty on converters..8 years or 80k miles

what i would do is get universal (magnaflow) converters. then get them put on at a exhaust shop...

You know what this sounds like, sounds like the KAM isn't being reset. In-turn, she could get worse before she gets better with each update or cleaning. It can take quite awhile for your PCM to adapt if you don't re-boot.

It will eventually adapt, but hell, if your changing the plugs without disconnecting the battery,then........ yea

I just gotta ask since I'm dense this evening, how do you figure the Keep Alive Memory is causing the exhaust to be hot in front of the cats? The lean burn would have to be so lean that the engine would have a major bad idle. Just wondering, not pickin'.

The price for the cats at $1000+ is absurd. You can get cats from Rock Auto for well under $100.00 each. It shouldn't cost that much to have them put on.

The truck has 132,000 miles on it and is out of warranty.

Take it to the dealer. It's throwing codes and you keep throwing parts at it. You obviously have no idea what the problem is.

Need4racin, I appreciate your very helpful suggestion. The things that I have replaced(or thrown money at it) has needed to been done anyway. I would rather do it myself and scew it up and learn something, than to pay somebody else to do it, for something I can do. We wouldn't need this forum if the response was "Take it to the dealership".

Even tho out of warranty, the cost of new converters can be offset substantially as posted on page one. Whether the work is done by a shop or yourself. I've done it, so has many others.

The savings there could be used to update your O2's, -just a thought.

Also, look thru your TSB's, never hurts.
