Throttle stuck, now problems

hey guys, after the amazing(or horrible) drive to work this morning, i went to move my truck in the parking lot so we could plow the parking spaces, put it in drive and tapped the gas..... and WHAAAAAAAA the throttle just stuck. well i got it shut down, and it didnt start for about a half hour, and when i started it(after un freezing the tb) it stumbled on itself for about 5 min, then it ran fine, and drove home fine later in the day. well just 10 min ago, i went to go get some chew, started it, and it idled fine, until i went to back out, tapped the gas, and it just stayed at like 2000-2500 rpm, my gas pedal returned, but the rpms stayed the same.(it was in the heated garage) now in park(only does it in park, not neutral, thats what confuses me) it idles at like 2000rpm, and it scares me. so what do you guys think is wrong? TPS goin out? throttle cable liner thing cracked and got moisture in it and froze? IAC messed up/frozen? something else?

oh ya, its an 02 with 5.4

thanks
Adam M

Similar problem

I had a similar issue this morning on my way to work. About five minutes away from work, I noticed the truck was coasting at a constant speed without me using the gas, even slowly accelerating. I tried to jam on the pedal, thinking maybe it would jar something loose, nothing happened. So I basically rode the brake the rest of the way.

I tried throwing it in neutral but it just revved up to around 4500 -5000 rpm. When I got the car parked, I threw it in park and it revved again. I turned off the ignition, tried starting it again, and again the same thing. I'm at work now. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could check here in the parking lot with limited access to tools before I attempt to drive home tonight? I'm driving a 1998 4.6L 4x4. Thanks in advance.

ya'll understand that in cold weather like you are probably experiencing that it's gonna take the truck a bit to warm up

Yeah, I understand that The problem is the truck was warm already. I let it warm up before I drove it, and this happened after 25 minutes of driving already. I would think the truck is warmed up enough at that point. It's 3° here now, with a windchill of -21, and I know that's pretty darn cold, but I've seen many colder days and haven't had issues... Any other thoughts?

Check the throttle cable and linkage including the cruise cable for binding. If the throttle body is dirty it can stick too. The PCM controls the engine speed so even if the IAC is stuck open the PCM will adjust the idle by removing fuel.

exactly, only mine was about 20 min of driving....it did it all day today, except for cold start and warm up period.... once it warmed up its idling at about 1700 rpm instead of revving wildly.... its in the garage warming up so i can take a better look...... never had this problem in the 3 years i have had it and driven it in this weather....hopefully its just a sticky tb or something stupid like that.....

and another thought i had, wouldn't it go away when warm if its moisture in the tb or something, because of the heat?

well i cleaned the tb(really didnt need it, just cleaned it and upper plenum this summer), and am now resetting the computer. hopefully theres something in there that resets or gets its bug removed. the throttle cable is smooth and isn't binding or anything. TPS looks fine, but cant fully check without my multimeter, which is being borrowed, and no vacuum leaks that i found.....so it looks like the only thing i can think of left is my IAC. which now that i think of it, the truck did fumble (rev up and down from 400-500 up to 800 rpms, then would settle at 700rpm) on the boat ramp when putting the boat in for duck hunting.....

edit: just took her for a 15 min drive, and she didnt do it, so snake87, try cleanin the tb(easy, maybe 30 min job in the cold) and resetting the computer(you could probably just reset the computer and see if thats it). but we'll see for sure tomorrow after my drive to and from work!

I had the throttle spring pop on my '03 Escape... scared the crap out of me.

I start it up and it goes rarararararararararara and watching the tach hit its limiter... when turning it off, it sounded like my '80s Genie Vacuum...

I then popped the hood finding out the spring popped on the throttle body. I immediately took it over to the closest Ford service center, and when the tech started it up, it went raraararararaara.... and I could tell he was like WTF. So they pushed it into the shop.

It was great... now since electronic throttle bodies are around, theres less of a chance for that to happen.

The throttle body is a key emissions component. Go immediately to the nearest Ford/L/M dealer & have them write up a repair order documenting the fault. Then remind them of the federally-mandated 8-year emissions warranty, described here:
