old school engine swap help...
ok, i have a 1978 f250 with a 400CI motor and an automatic, 3 speed i think, i am wanting to know what all would be needed to swap a carbed 460 in with a 4 speed manual transmission.
AND what all would be needed if i wanted to do a, technically 7.5, non carbed 460 with a manual transmission

thanks jethat,
theres a place around here that gets engines, transmissions, rear ends, all that out of totaled cars.
so i should just go with a crabed 460 then, i was thinkin it wouldnt take much to swap that in

and i never added, my 400 burns coolant and id rather just get a motor id like to have than to fool around with head gaskets, and it turn out to be cracked heads or something like that, and i use this as my farm truck and would like to have a manual since this auto is on its last leg
I like the 400. They are under appreciated because of the era they were built. Ford had to detune them to make them pass emissions.. if you fix that they can be a good engine. You probably have a c6 that just needs an overhaul. Me I'd fix and improve what you have. Start of with an edlebrock 4 barrel intake and a decent cam. strip the emissions stuff..

well what would you do about the heads, is there a way to check to see if the heads are cracked, i dont wanna tear it all down, change the head gaskets, then it still burn coolant.

i have the same setup you want in my old school i keep eating up ring gears and starters
