cant get the fuel filter off
cant get the fuel filter off
Hi, I posted a thread entitled engine wont start and it was suggested I replace the fuel filter, my problem is I cant get the filter to release I bought the tool to remove the filter but cant seem to get it to release the coupling from the fuel line, why they dont move the filter location down one foot I dont know, mine sits on the frame rail right where the cross member intersects which makes it difficult toget to, the tool I used was from harbor freight not sure if a higher quality tool is necessary wondering if anyone else has had this problem any suggestions would be appreciated, have to try one more time before bringing it to the mechanic thanks wayne r
If you are using the aluminum tool, it can sometimes be too thick to go in far enough. A better tool is th plastic ones that come in a set. Same ones used in airconditioning service. However, sometimes, the clip is rusted or dirty and will not release. I had changed mine successfully, several times and ran into one that would not release. I took it to a lube shop and they ended up yanking the clip out and replacing it. they indicated that it is not uncommon.

A catalyst will help on the stubborn filters. Or a penetrant, that reminds me, I need to add that to the shopping list lol. Yea you need to free up the mechanism all around so that it expands correctly. Otherwise the plastic tool pry's at location only. You'll ware it out lol.
I use a cheap oil line tool , it's narrow enough ~

You can also yank the filter from it's holder and turn to assist the penetrant (well, some you can). Then it's like others posted, towards the tool first / then back. What's a good rust inhibiter ? I can't think of the name dangit!! PB Blast ? Something like that, - I need coffee.

yep PB blaster "panda ****" its nasty yellow and reeks but it does the trick!
Just changed my fuel filter this past weekend and had to retry with the tool several times before the line released. Might have to give it 4 or 5 attempts before it comes off.

Well I tried again this time with penetrating fluid and the set of plastic tools, and It finally it released, I got the new filter on and so far the truck has been running good, Hope fully this solves my problem, just wanna say thanks to everyone for your help wayne-r
Well, the connector wouldn't release and I lost control, turned a goofy shade of RED and found my SawZall..Yea, no damn fuel filter is going to kick my ***

Anyway, don't let this happen to you, use a OEM Motorcraft replacement fuel filter, - always! Those filters do an exceptional job, but need to be changed more often then recommended IMO. I change mine every 9000 miles (or 3rd oil change) and can't believe how nasty the fuel looks draining out of that thing. Never had a problem servicing with a Motorcraft element. Changing frequently enhances pump longevity. I have 170,000 miles on my second pump, - it works!
Thanks for posting, glad you got it, - they can be a mothuh.

BTW - If you purchase the Blue tool above, - get a couple of them. Their cheap in price, but the spring mechanism gives way after awhile. It's probably not the best tool for the job, but it's the one that has worked for me, time and time again.

But I guess it was worth it, - I ended up with some good stuff
Problem, I can't remember what it was called.. Oh well, the can was Black and Blue lol

The Farm, this reminds me of a guy driving around with the parts I needed to fix the Oliver broke down in the field. It was early in the morning, - poor guy was a parts runner from John Deere and it was foggy as hell. I had him on the 2 way and he was lost. I asked for his location/cross roads and his reply was , - "I don't know! All I see is Corn, every where I look, there's just corn!!!" We finally met up about noon, after the fog burnt off..

fuel filter replacement is one of those jobs that seems so easy yet it can become frustrating when it does not go as planned. well luckily some people get alot of practicing changing theres ever 30k they wont have to worry about the clips seizing at least.
