5.4 Liter Problems. any suggestions?

I Have a 2005 f-150 with the 5.4. when i try to crank it up it will just turnover for about a minute before it will crank and then when it does crank it runs really rough.i can also hear a fairly loud ticking noise when im at interstate speeds. i can hear it over my mud grapplers at 75 mph. does anybody have any ideas as to what the ticking noise could be? and any suggestions for changing spark plugs without breaking them off in the aluminum heads?

do you mean, you have to crank it for a minute before it'll actually fire up? does it run rough for a short period or the whole time its running? have you tried pushing gas pedal to floor while cranking? or priming the pump before cranking?

I don't understand your words.

Where I come from "cranking" always means that the starter motor is cranking the engine over. "Catching" or "firing" refers to internal combustion happening. But it sounds like you might be using "crank" to mean "fire"?

As an interesting side note, the term "crank" comes from the days when you actually had to turn the manual crank rod at the front of the vehicle with your arms to turn the engine over.

I had a '69 Nissan Patrol that had an electric starter as well as a back-up hand crank that could be inserted into a hole in the bumper to turn over the heavy 4.0L cast iron straight six. I only needed to use it once. I had left my lights on for a 8 hour shift in the mountains of Montana. I came back late at night, my truck was the only rig left in the parking area, the lights were not even glowing and it was 15 or 20 degrees below freezing with a strong mountain wind blowing. I realized the problem when I turned the key and did not even hear the solenoid click. Bump starting it was out of the question with all the ice and snow. I figured there was no way this beast was going to start with the battery so dead even if I could get it to turn over with the cold-thickened oil and the hand crank but didn't really have any other options at my disposal so decided to give it a go.

I turned the headlight switch off, put the transmission in neutral, set the throttle lock for just above idle, pulled out the manual choke **** all the way and fished out the emergency start crank rod from it's built-in holder in the back of the rig. I inserted it into the receptacle in the end of the crankshaft, took a deep breath and and cranked with all my might. I didn't even get a full turn on the crank when she roared to life and smoothly idled away at 1300 rpm's, purring like a warm kitten on a cold night. If that didn't warm my heart and increase the bond that a man feels for his trusty truck, I don't know what would!

I don't think so, you can't crank more than 5 seconds (consecutive) or the injectors shut down. Well the 97 - 03's where that way.
