Starting problem, need some help

2001 f150 supercrew, 5.4l, 4x4, 138k miles

For the past 3 weeks this has happened to me about 5-6 times.

I go to start the engine, it cranks just fine but will not turn over.

When I switch the key to run (but not all the way to start) I do not hear the fuel pump humming and there is some clicking going on under the hood.

I keep switching the key back and forth from off to run and eventually I will hear the fuel pump humming and it will start right up.

The engine runs great once started and has not stopped running while driving.

What do you guys think?

Change the fuel filter lately? Now that its getting colder gas thickens and if the fuel filter is old the pump has a hard time building pressure..

I am not an expert on the modular engines but since you can cycle the key a few times and it will start my guess would be the fuel pump. Maybe someone with more knowledge on these systems will give you a better answer.

yea what jethat said

That's the relay or Interrupt, I'll get a diagram for yuh, - Hang on.

Well here's a 98 -

You can see what I'm referring to, but you really need the 01 diagram. Come to think of it, it's not the Interrupt, it would be the pump relay itself. You need to locate that.

That's in your owners manual in the glove box. Or you can download it here -

https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

Find your relay, when their bad, they can be hot when touched. That's a dead givaway.

I changed out the relay.

The old relay was hot so hopefully this was the problem. We will find out in a couple weeks.

Yep, I bet that was the problem.

My relay is PBD under the hood. I know they moved them in your model, where was it?

It is in the power distribution box which is under the hood, drivers side corner right next to the rear of the fender.

Yea, mines in the same place, I meant to say PDB not PBD . Well, they must not have moved that one then.
