What purpose does a underdrive pulley serve?

I was reading the wikipedia page about them and seemed to just confuse me even more. Not mechanical literate needless to say..

Anyone help me out here in understanding?

Mainly, they separate you from your money.

On an engine that revs MUCH higher than stock (like a drag racer), it prevents the accessories from overrevving, and reduces the torque they take from the engine. But since most are self-regulating (alt, A/C, P/S), they take the same power, so that's moot. And they make it harder to find the right belt since you end up with a different length.

I used this set for a while:http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...talogno=528774

UPs don't add enough to justify the expense and energy to install them imo. You will not likely feel any difference in power.

You would see a much bigger difference with a E-fan conversion.
