He cant MAKE you give him anything. Your willingness to correct the problem says your honorable but your pal aint. if you do any thing only do that stuff that makes the truck what it was. You dont have to make it better then it was.. He should be glad your willing to do anything. Legally you cant be made to buy his truck either especially for twice its value. Honestly your pal would have a toough time getting a judge to make you give him anything. He took the risk when he handed you his keys. Thats why I dont let people mess with my stuff..

 

How is it your fault his engine blew? I'd tell him to take a hike.

if you replace it for him then get a used low mileage engine from a junk yard. any 97-2000 truck 4.6 will bolt right in without any modifications. when you checked the oil- was it overfull? which rod was it?

 

That truck ain't worth 11 grand with a brand new engine.........

Go to a boneyard and look for a running 4.6.

 

Our 2000 F-150 Supercab with a 5.4L and 85,000 miles is worth $7,000 - $7,500. Your "friend" isn't being realistic about his truck.

Say goodbye to him and the truck. What kind of friend would demand that? On the other hand i don't loan out my truck and don't ask others for something like that.

 

$11k for an '00? That's totally crazy. I sold an '02 SC XLT like brand new with a ton of extra stuff on it and 22k mi in '04 when I bought the truck I have now for $13k. Absolutely gorgeous truck. He is dreaming. I don't know his truck but I would say $6k is more like realistic. I would definitely have it torn down and see what caused something that just doesn't normally happen. New engine? He's had a couple 2 many beers.

 

I dunno, I'd have to beat him up some,- after those ultimatums. - Then prolly go to jail. - Get out, - Slap him up some more, since were friends and all.

You don't owe him squat...[if the freindship is worth it] get a quote from a salvage yard for a running 4.6....offer to pay 1/2.
Then either help him install it giving equal hours, or pay 1/2 of the shop charge.

Or you could tell him to go chit in his hat...
There HAD to have been a problem before you got it.

If your story is true that you were only borrowing the truck for one errand (and not an extended time) and you weren't abusing it, then he is crazy to expect you to pay for it.

So what happened after it quit running? You had it towed or what? How do you know it threw a rod?

 

^^^ Kind of what I was thinking. The douche bag probably knew something was up w/the motor i.e. making noise, knocking, smokin', something!!!!

I suppose if I were in your shoes I would probably feel somewhat liable but on the other hand I would also think that my buddy would understand that it just happened and had nothing to do w/me borrowing it. Especially if he was a friend and knew me. Who borrows a buddy's stuff and beats on it? Not a buddy!!!

The value of his truck in running condition is $3100 per KBB. I'd offer him a $1000.00 which is about 1/3 the value of the truck and if he gives you any lip, give him nothing. But if you can, I'd definitely get a sample of the oil that is in the engine. Should yer "friend" decide to sue you, you would have some tangible evidence to support your claims.

And never borrow a friends vehicle. Renting is far cheaper and less stressful on relationships.

 

I think it may be how I was raised, but I was always told if you borrow something from someone, it has to be returned in the same condition you got it in. It may not have been your fault directly, but it was in your posession when it broke. If it was the other way around, would you just say "Its ok" and take your busted *** truck back?
