Coil on plug?

2000 f150 4.6

I had #8 coil on plug go out. I replaced it with a new one myself (I however didnt use dielectric grease) right after changing it, it ran great but I picked up an intermittant flutter/spark knock while accelerating. it only started after I replaced the coil. You can cut truck off and back on and it quits fluttering. Could me not using the grease be causing this problem, like I said it started soon as I changed the coil. Thanks in advance for any answer!! ---Sean

Yes, it certainly can. You put some grease up in the boot and then you sue some on all the rubber seams to insure moisture is kept out. It has made a difference for others. Hope that is your problem.

You have a COP system on a 2000 4.6? I believe yuh, just haven't seen to many of those in the 2000 model year 4six. Most still had "Coil Packs" in 2000. COP systems for the 4six went on all 01 models. Your the second person I've heard of with one those in the 2000.

___________

Anyway, Do you have a CEL on ? Did you get anything wet by chance latley? How did you determine, -when that one went bad the first time?

Sometimes those springs inside the boots of a new coil become disconnected from the coil blade. -It may pay off to check before installing if you ever run into problems again.
Yea, you just pull the boot from the coil and the spring SHOULD remain attached to the coil blade / boot slides off spring.

Just something else to watch for if you run into problems in the future.

Glad she's fixed - Bluejay guessed it?? Ahh, -he just got lucky is all

If been told that, you can check for little hairline cracks where the sticker is, on top of the COP. Usually if you have these cracks, the COP is failed or will fail shortly. Sure enough when I had a miss on #6 and pulled the COP it had a crack. Replaced it, along with a few others, and all the plugs. The trucks runs new again.

Changed my #4 COP this weekend had a P0304 code show up. Took me about 15 minutes total to change out. But I did not use the grease, I guess I should have researched more on here. If I get this problem I know what to do now

Yea you can see the fracture or crack after you clean the tops (hairline) , you only have to Magnify 8x's before you begin to see the void. Once subjected to water/liquid, the top reveal which extends further past ,-traps and holds said liquid for a period of time. This eventually worms it's way to generator or coil windings shorting them out. Split one open and the copper windings will be dark on top.

The top protective layer has been improved lately,-within the last year or so via GAMMA. The top layer which protects a more porous layer has been thickened, in turn - can handle the stress which they tend to me under from time to time.

Motorcraft (stamped) and GLOBAL AUTO distribute/sell GAMMA updated coils. I've been running the updates since last winter along with a set of DENSO iridium's (Motorcraft has not produced "fine wire" plugs for the 97-03 5.4L petrol engines yet.)

I can cruise @ about 77-78 mph @ 2200 Rpms and get 16 mpg consistently, which is pretty good considering speed and Rpms. The most surprising difference is what I get now in city driving which is about the same as highway~ 15-16mpg. The average in the past was 12 mpg (city) for this 98 5.4L.

IMO, this is a good combination for our ignition systems
