Is there any way to mount an extra battery underneath the hood of an 06 F150 5.4 FX4?

Yes, why? Not much reason for an extra battery unless there's a need...big stereo, winch, running lots of accessories with the motor off, etc. If you doubt the life/strength of your stock one (mine lasted 5 years) then get an Optima. One of those will handle just about anything.

In amateur radio when using an amplifier a second battery is used .That is usually put behind the seats. An AGM battery ,the type for electronics , is used and it's hooked up with charger etc. See www.K0BG.com for details.

Talking It would help when..

I use my F150 for camping, use a truckbed tent and mattress.

I get a really good nights sleep, then in the morning the battery is dead due to the auto on and off lights after dark or the use of any 12v accessories and and such..

When the batt goes down you can't open any windows, no auto locks, really sucks..

I am currently researching batteries and switches and cables and such, I will probably have to manufacture an under the bed battery mount with an Isolater and dual batt switch with a power connection near the license plate.

For accessories such as microwave/fan/?? it appears the way to go would be with two 6v golf cart batteries wired for 12 volts. It would give me about 200AH of deep cycle available and won't run my cranking battery down..

Look up Painless Wiring. They have some really trick dual battery wiring set-ups. Only other thing you'd have to provide is the other battery and mount. Definately go with a yellow top Ultima fir those camping needs.

A buddy of mine installed a secondary battery under the body of the truck. They sell underbody battery holders that are sealed from the elements pretty much. He then wired it in as a secondary.

IIRC he used something like this...

Not quite sure if it is the same one or if he got it from the same place, but it would work.

Post Optima is a good setup,However..

Since I only use the extra battery when parked I really don't need the characteristics of an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery like an Optima. "The ability to be installed in any position, vibration proof and fumeless (no outgassing) battery."

I need an RC (Reserve Capacity) battery and I need to keep it separate from my SLI (Starting Lights Ignition) battery.

Soo.... then I discover that in the modern computer control systems on some vehicles voltages are used as a data point in the computer and may effect things like variable cam and ignition timing...sooo I realize I need to ensure I don't suddenly cause a high or low voltage spike by using my battery selector switch to start charging my RC battery... (and thus suddenly activating my yellow "check engine" light).

I see that I am going to have to use a battery isolator for control here.

sigh.. it just seems to get more and more complicated and all I started looking for is some camping power without running a stupid generator...

I think I will go have a and ponder it

Been looking at this as well. Running my strobe light for 30 minutes without leaving the truck running kills my battery. Only thing I see possible for under the hood would be between the air intake and coolant resavour. And it would have to be a small golf cart battery or something that isnt as wide as the stock battery. I believe the stock size is 9 inches by 7 inches. Not sure of the height only because I didnt measure it.
